unanimous response there. Except for the horn buttons of course. I should note that was the only missing trim on the entire car. I think its pretty unlikely given saabs aren't too common.
system by system:
its not as bad as it sounds. everything under the hood is where it should be. nothing is visibly missing. tires are 1/4" give or take of wear left all around without uneven or noticeable wear. (steel rims though with some sort of plastic hubcap deals. i'll shop for something appropriately sweedish)
body. the front windshield seal is coming apart at the bottom. considering the windshield has already got one nick in it, it'll probably spread and crack, so thats another known expense. no rust except at the occasional rust pimple and nick- one minor one on the tailgate and i don't remember any others anywhere else. electric locks may be a gremlin i was told. i'll look for posts on that topic.
charging- battery and alternator- are pretty easy to diagnose given what i've read. good thing i've got my voltmeter
bearings and cv joints i can just look at with a jack and listening (once the brake is fixed)at speed under load (i.e. swerving and making my passengers use the jesus stick)
muffler and underbody are clearly from the southern US. and no suction at the tailpipe.
engine compartment is dry, no grime or oil, nothing squirting when i opened the hood. pretty clean given the age. snug serpentine belt- a gatorback from the looks of it- and no audible vacuum leaks.
compression test results will be available shortly.
and of course, for the long term test, there's the seasonal road trip/test drive to st. louis to visit the gilfriend's family-pit crew and to closely look at oil consumption on the way there and back.
once its roadworthy its a calculated risk but if we're unhappy we can always sell it. maybe not to a saaber though.
i was told, 'invest only what you can afford to lose' on a completely unrelated subject but its particularly relevant here. on the other hand, there's a lot of fingers.
