One method is to see how far the chain tensioner is extended. That is a measure of a combination of chain wear and chain guide wear. Since you want to replace both, it's a fair measurement. Check the archives for it. Frankly, it's not the one I use.
I prefer to check the chain with the valve cover off. First, inspect the chain visually for signs of wear and scuffing. The same for the cam teeth. Then turn the engine to TDC for cylinder #1. You'll see a mark on the cams, and a mark on the bearing pillow block. See where the line hits on the "V" mark. If the line hits at the middle of the "V", the chain is pretty good. If the line is near the left or right arm of the "V", the chain is a bit worn. Off the "V" the chain is shot and/or you've jumped a tooth.
The chain gets longer as it wears, because the link pins get smaller and the holes bigger. These few thousandths of an inch per link add up over the length of the chain. The longer the chain, the worse the marks will line up.
