Check the sidewalls. If they have many hairline cracks in the rubber, especially near the rim, look to see if they appear pretty deep and have spread to wider cracks consistently around the tirewall. If the hairline cracks are very superficial, like you could barely get a fingernail in them, and they are not covering the majority of the sidewall you are probably AOK. Sun damage can really dry out the sidewalls, especially sitting for some time and make the wall weak and unsafe. Check inside and outside tirewalls. If the car had been driven on a consistent basis, and been reasonably cared for previously, then your tires are probably just fine, UNLESS you see serious deep cracking in the rubber.

I learned this the hard way when I bought some used Pirellis years ago for a VW Jetta. Tread was great but the sidewall cracking was serious and deep. On a long trip through Canada, ON OUR HONEYMOON, one tire just blew out near the rim. I changed the tire and the other blew within 5 miles! We lucked out that there was an auto body repair place still open a mile further that we limped to. They made some calls and someone had a used tire that they could put on the rim just before closing time. We lucked out and I never bought a used tire again. Looking back, those Pirellis should have been junked and never sold by any one.

I bought my 98 9000 with tires that were at least a year or two old. They were just replaced last fall after 4 years. They had some checking (cracks) going on that was definitely noticeable, but not unsafe by any means.

Hope this helps. Take care.
