Yes, that is one of the most beautiful roads. My other votes would go to the Beartooth Highway (212) between Cooke City, MT (Yellowstone) and Red Lodge, MT, Going to the Sun Road in Glacier N.P. (MT), and Tioga Pass in Yosemite.
As for the smell, I'd check your belt for slipping... maybe the car just got hot. See if it happens again? It might have been someone else's brakes, who knows.

Picture: Tioga Pass's East Ascent/Descent. Tioga Pass will be open earlier this year than it has been for a while. It's too bad, too, because it means that the ski season was less than stellar, and that water storage is down in the mountains.
