That would be the noise you are looking for right? (hope I spelt it right)

Glad you found the problem, I was convinced that I had done serious damage to mine when it happened to me (just for a giggle, I attach a link to my mayday call on the board, just feel the anguish when you you read it! :-)

The noise you seek is created by the dump valve. The standard dump valve/blow off valve/hooter valve (it is called many things) on a Saab is a recirculating type, ie instead of dumping the excess vacuum into the atmosphere, it just directs it back into the intake plumbing. Having said that, they do still make a noise, it is just quiter than an atmospheric dump valve (as fitted to my current car).

To force it to make as much noise as possible, boost hard then take your foot quickly off the gas, you should hear the noise with the windows open. If not, the dump valve may be faulty. Although not a train crash, it is worth fixing as otherwise the reversed airflow will stall the vanes of the turbo and I believe it can lead to turbo damage in bad cases.

If you are replacing the dump valve and you are looking for a good loud Pssshhhtt noise, then fit an atmospheric dump valve. Make sure you get the right one for the Saab 9000 turbo as it comes with all the bits you need.I understand it needs to be a piston rather than diaphragm type as the wrong type can cause idling issues and stalling on overrun. Search the performance board for the recomended make (mine came fitted to the car when I bought it).

Good luck

Andy (West London)
