Actually, it could be a bunch of things.

I would doubt it is the fuel pump. It obviously does run, and runs well enough to provide pressure for the car to accelerate, etc. So the question is, does it spin up when you go to start the car? Try this - turn the key to ON, but don't start the car. After 5 seconds or so, turn the key all the way to start. Listen for the pump to run when you turn the key to ON. This is also a good trick, as the pump does run for a few seconds - if the problem is low fuel pressure due to a bad valve, it can make the car start.

If it were fuel pump related, I'd suspect the fuel pump relay first. An electric motor takes more current to start than it takes to run. If the relay contacts are pitted, they might not pass enough current to allow the pump to reliably start spinning. But once it does start spinning, it works fine. You can always pop out the fuel pump relay, pop off the cover, and clean up the relay contacts with a little fine sandpaper or a couple of quick swipes with an emery board.

Starting is always tricky - a lot of things effect it. You didn't mention the year/engine of your car. If you have a good old-fashioned distributor, make sure your timing is right. Too-advanced timing can cause hard starting. No matter what ignition system, make sure your spark plugs are in good shape, the proper type, and gapped properly. If your battery is a little weak and the engine turns slowly, it may not create enough compression to start properly. Cranking it a few times puts a coating of oil on the cylinder walls and helps seal minor scratches, increasing compression some. If it is cranking slowly, you can try opening up the throttle a little bit. Pulling vacuum against a closed throttle (and engine is nothing but a big air pump) takes energy, and if the battery is weak, it'll crank faster with the throttle open. Just don't go beyond about half throttle, as depending on the FI system, it actually cuts off fuel if the throttle is wide open.

It sounds like it's a cold start problem. Does it hot start OK?
