'92 9000T 5 speed - rebuild worth it? Posted by Nixter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I just acquired a non-running '92 9000 Turbo 5 speed with 144,xxx miles as a parts car for $500; now running with my spare DI cassette. I took it around the n-hood the other night and the engine runs great - fact is it runs AWESOME. The body is very straight with only a few dings and there is some easily repairable damage on the right rear wheel well. Interior is in great shape. It's a silver on grey with the Aero wheels and Z-rated tires.
The *only* problem is the 5-speed - it's a bit rubbery (I suspect engine/tranny mounts and/or dogbone) and it makes what sounds like a scraping (pinion bearing??) noise.. under acceleration and decel the noise is there - with the clutch in the noise is gone. I would guess it's transmission time. Bottom line - is this worth it? I priced a rebuilt trans at about $2,400 and I could R&R in my garage. Would a used gearbox out of a later year work? I'd really like to resurrect this Saab & make it a running vehicle again - bit I don't want to spend $4,000 in doing so. BUT - I'd hate to part this thing out as well...
Thanks to everyone on this list
