My Haynes is confusing on the speedo transducer. Indicates one style for after '94-my experience, yet says that the manual gear with cable was pre '87. So assuming your's is the transducer style. Here is what they say about it:
Located on the differential housing at the rear of the transmission case.
Unplug the wiring harness from the transducer at the connector.
Remove the transducer retaining screw, and unscrew the unit from the transmission casing.
Recover and discard the O-ring seal
Refit the transducer by following the removal procedure in reverse. Must use new o-ring seal.
So that is their instruction. Not sure, but I seem to recall a caution on tieing onto the gear with a copper wire before removing so you don't drop it into the tranny. These instructions seem sparce, so be careful esp with dropping the gear.
So, yes, it seems with those qualifiers, that you just remove the transducer/gear from the top of the tranny and check it out! I hope it is that easy for you!
