Helpful hot start issue info Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My wife was complaining that our '97 CSE was having hot start issues - it wouldn't catch right away, taking usually three or four cranking sessions of 5 seconds each to start. No problem with cold starting. This car usually catches immediately, hot or cold. The problem began just after she filled the gas tank.
She wondered if it was bad gas. I didn't find anything wrong under the hood, and no CEL. I drove the car for a while and duplicated the problem.
On a whim, I checked the gas cap. It wasn't loose, but it hadn't been tightened enough to click. I tightened it to three clicks (as I always do), and the problem went away.
I'm assuming that the cap was just a little loose. Not enough for the vapor recirculation system to trigger a fault, but just enough to drop the pressure on a hot tank and a hot start.
So, if you have a hot start problem, make sure the gas cap is tight. And even tight, it may have a worn gasket. Don't assume the ECU can detect a slight gas cap leak.
