The plug on the end of the wire is generically known as a "Motorola Plug". That little device that fell out is actuall a capacitor (for impedance matching / DC blocking). I would think that it is not absolutely necessary. If you aren't getting reception, you aren't getting a connection. My guess is that the center conductor of the cable isn't making it all the way to the nipple, now that the capacitor is missing.
You should only need to replace the Motorola Plug. A quick trip to the Radio Shack site turns up a solderless (yea!) replacement motorola plug for $2.79. (p/n 274-709). I think you'll live OK without the series capacitor.
