The key (pun intended) is that the lights go out - do the dash lights go out, too?
If the engine stops running, the dash lights should all come on. But since they don't (I assume from your description) the issue isn't an engine/ignition sensor issue. The dash lights not coming on (and all other lights going off) imply electrical power is going away. It's not the battery - you can remove the battery when the engine is running and the car will keep going - the alternator provides power. It's not the alternator, because the battery would provide back-up. It's hard to assume both would die simultaneously and then miraculously heal.
So something is shutting the car off, just like you turned the key off. My guess - either a bad ignition switch (key) or bad Main Relay. Those are the only two devices I can think of that could shut off the car like the key had been turned to off. And faulty ignition switches aren't uncommon.
