'91 and '92 9000 turbos ("9kt") were identical, except for traction control system (TCS) on the '92. The 2.3L engine continued to be used in all 9kt's until end of the model line in '98. There was also the 9000 CDE, a four-door with trunk, which had the 2.3L engine. I don't know specifics, but I would only get a cam from a 2.3L turbo engine, not normally aspirated.
I used Haynes when I did my head gasket. It wasn't a bad job at all, just took awhile.
One problem is that you don't know any history on that particular engine. Did it throw its balance shaft chain? How do the piston crowns look? If not damaged by a valve, that probably didn't happen. Now might be a good time to replace the balance shaft chain and drive sprocket, as it probably wasn't done, and it's a failure prone item on the earlier 2.3L balance shaft engines. That would also allow you to get a look at the oil pump and take a look at other components. Definitely don't skip getting the head resurfaced.
