I personally wouldn't even use a spacer, let alone a hub adaptor. If you use a spacer, you need to also get longer hub bolts. MY (just that, MY) understanding of the adaptors to put 9-5 wheels on a 9000 is that you effectively bolt the adaptor to the car with 4 bolts, and then bolt the wheel to the adaptor with 5 bolts. They've certainly been well road tested by Terry and others, but they are braver men than I am. I believe it is also quite possible to swap the 9000 hubs out and replace them with 9-5 hubs. Obviously a lot more work and money.
I guess I would feel OK with a THIN spacer (one of 5mm or less) as long as the hub bolts were exchanged for ones to accomodate the length of the spacer.
If you go looking for aftermarket wheels for a 9000, not much will come up. However, as you probably know, a number of other cars, particularly some Fords (Mustang -1993, Focus, Contour, later Mercury Cougar) share the 4x108mm bolt pattern, though I think the offset may be different. So, do a search for wheels for some of these and see what you like - you could probably make it fit a 9000. OZ makes some gorgeous wheels (Superlegerra, Ultralegerra) which are light and strong and come in cool colors. They are not cheap though. TSW makes a lot of more affordable and heavier wheels which are decent quality, and often come from the factory UNDRILLED, so they can be drilled to fit pretty much anything. Check with any of the Boston area wheel places, like Direct or Town Fair; they should be able to give you some options. They may even give you a surprisingly good price on a wheel/tire package. Then, you can keep your other alloys for snows. The 9000 CS/CSE should have never been put on 15" wheels. I would say 16" or 17" inchers are optimum around here.
