thanks everyone for the quick responses and the friendly welcome. we're picking it up in about three hours so i'll report back on the state of the sound system. i'm taking chet baker's "let's get lost" cd as the inaugural tunes disc to play.

i was amused by the audiophile references since by any definition i actually *am* one (i was editor-at-large of "listener" magazine for many years and an audiophile cable company called transparent is now my main design client!) but what i'm looking for in the car is just plain ol' straightforward and enjoyable, and it sounds as if that's what i'll get if the system is in okay shape. i am happy to save the audiophile stuff for the house where there's no road noise, and where i don;t have to pay attention to driving.

good to know saabradio.com is a resource for the future, too.

i'm sure i'll have more questions once i have the car in hand. feels like something of a betrayal going away from C900 3-doors but i am very excited about the more comfortable seats (i have to make long trips) and in general the chance to try a 9000. seems that this 98 CSE is a great one to start with!
