Hi all,
(2.3 CSE LPT converted to FPT 1996 )
I was looking forward to a trip to the North of England as she would roll over 185K miles.
Trouble started on motorway/freeway with steam filling the cabin, loud Pssshht noise and scalding water running down passenger footwell and on my legs.
I found small mechanic shop and asked them to put a hose between the inlet and outlet ports on block thereby bypassing the heater core which I assumed had blown and continued on my way.
Back on the motorway/freeway again and almost immediately, the radiator level light came on, so I filled it and carried (on assuming the mechanics had not refilled the fluid lost when the heater core blew).
About 10 miles later it came on again, so I pulled over. Expansion bottle was empty again. Fearing the worst I checked the oil - orange mayonnaise! ARRRGGHHH! Mileometer showed 184,983 miles.
I called the AA (UK car recovery) and they couldn't help me (long story and this is a long enough thread already) so my only option was to try and limp home the 96 miles home.
I stopped every 8 miles and refilled with water and did get home eventually, praying to all the Nordic Gods all the way.
So, finally here is my question. I have spoken to a retired mechanic who said he would strip the head off for £100. So if there is no other damage it will only cost me £100 labour (I had already bought head gasket rebuilt kit as I wanted to do it anyway). As I've driven the car using orange mayonnaise for oil, what are the chances the engine is done for anyway? When I was driving the car home it was very lumpy at anything under 2K revs and at idle would shake horribly.
I love the car (obviously) but don't want to throw too much more money into her as I can pick up another for £1000-£1500 and if I do find that replacing the head gasket and changing oil and filter works I still have the heater core to deal with?
What say you?
Kind regards
Andy (West London)
