If you've got the fuel flow to run the car at 100 MPH, it isn't a clogged fuel filter. And the fuel pump runs the same whether the car is at idle or at top speed. So I don't think it is that.
The backfire is interesting. Usually that means that a slug of raw fuel has made it out of the engine and into the exhaust system. So again, fuel isn't the problem, but the thing that lights off the fuel - ignition - would be suspect.
First, check the plugs. Do they look fouled? A new set of plugs won't hurt. Of course, the DI is always a suspect. If the stalling is more related to engine speed - more likely to stall at low engine speed than high - I'd actually suspect the CPS. The CPS is what is known as a Variable Reluctance (VR) sensor. That doesn't mean it's more willing with a few drinks in it - it's just a coil of wire that gets a voltage induced in it when a chunk of metal goes by. And that chunk of metal is on the crankshaft - a shutterwheel.
The think about VR sensors is that the size (voltage) of the signal coming out is a function of distance from the shutterwheel and how fast the shutter wheel is going. Closer and faster both give a bigger signal.
I'm pretty sure that in a '94 the CPS is mounted in the block; in earlier cars it is mounted behind the harmonic balancer. I'd make sure it isn't backing out, and that the cable isn't damaged. But if the CPS is getting flaky in a way that is decreasing the signal out, it would show up at low RPM before it shows up at high RPM.
Are there any faults being thrown? Is the CEL on?
