why blower fan motors hate trees

Since my son moved to a rural area, that is loaded with trees, I have been cautioning him to periodically (once a week or so) clean out the heater/ac intake area (at the base of the windshield) from all the tree debris (pine needles, acorns, leaves, small branch sticks) that collects there. My warnings continued to fall on deaf ears until recently when the blower fan motor died at 82,000 miles on his 94 9000. The mechanic who replaced the motor for us (along with the heater core) reported that the blower fan area was loaded with pine needles and debris, and that the two drain hoses from the heater box (where the blower fan motor lives) were totally jammed up.
Guess that blower motors don't work too well when they are under water. Hopefully this lesson will get "junior" to keep the intake area clean.
