Thanks for the congratulations. It took a little longer than I would have liked, and rest assured that I will follow your advice and replace those pulleys and belt more often.
I might want to replace the crank pulley as well -- it isn't exactly new, it got wedged enough by the rubber to sit at a rather scary looking angle w.r.t. the block (until I removed the belt debris) and it has about an 0.5 mm wobble when I look at it from above. Maybe less than that, but enough to be visible. Probably a good idea to just replace it, but I think I'll take my time and try to get the part in the least expensive way possible.
But yeah. Kudos to the saab dealer network for having access to parts next day at 10:00 am if an order is placed by 2:00 pm the previous day. Had I needed to rely on NAPA I would have been stuck there for a week. And honestly, without having my VIN, how would they have known what particular naunce of 234i engine I had? Lucky me I had the one with the 27mm bolt and separate washer holding the crank pulley on. From what I understand the 30mm bolt with integrated washer version is much more difficult to deal with.
And yes, there was some sphincter tightening. But I knew that it was a fixable problem after seeing what had happened, and it really required not much more than a floor jack, jack stand, long 1/2" drive torque wrench and an $18 set of misc tools from Wal-Mart. Oh, and a 27mm socket from Checker. Hmm, come to think of it I'll be keeping that set of items with me at all times from now on. That and a spare belt and pulley set. :)
Finally, I ended up removing the liner and using exactly the method you described, in advance of reading your post. I guess it's just what made sense -- but what doesn't make sense is for the thing to even be there, unless it's not meant to be removed. Anyway I just shouldn't have forgotten to replace it while in WY. By the time I realized that it wouldn't pop back in I was really really ready to get out of Dodge, as it were.
Oh, and I have had enough hall-effect distributors fail in my former fleet of ->'87 900s to know that this crank position sensor isn't a bad setup at all, just a little disappointed at how easily it was destroyed by a set of circumstances that weren't part of the standard failure mode.
