Spun a bearing Posted by AdamB [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Unfortunately it turned out that the first diagnosis of my engine knock/tick was correct. It was a con rod bearing. :(
For some reason the bearing fractured into 3-4 separate pieces and spun on the crankshaft scoring it and the rod cap. Other than that the engine looked remarkably clean and new considering it's gone over 200k miles. The other bearings looked fine and the oil pan had no sludge in it. I wonder what the reason for the broken bearing could be? It didn't look like it had been worn so thin it had broken from that.
So I've just ordered a "new" engine (only 68k miles and with warranty) from a Swedish breaker for about $1200. I considered rebuilding the current engine, but that would have been much more expensive and time consuming. A Saab engine with only 68K on it is practically new anyway.
What would you recommend that I change out at the same time? I plan to do the clutch of course incl. bearings and slave cylinder. What else would be a good idea to do?
Thanks.
