Yesterday I installed new outer tie rods on our 1996 9000CSE (at 56,000 miles, the boots on the oem tie rods had both torn). Installing the drivers side was a no brainer, however, the “fun” began with the right side tie rod. When I attempted to install the locking nut onto the threaded stud that goes through the hole in the fitting on the wheel hub, the threaded stud proceeded to turn with the locknut as I attempted to tighten the nut, so the nut was obviously going nowhere and not tightening the tie rod onto the fitting. Hmmmmmmm it appeared that Mr. Murphy had now joined this installation party!

I then hatched another plan to hold the threaded stud in place while tightening the locknut. I purchased a Vice Grip 6” C-clamp at the Home Depot (never knew that Vice Grip also had a C-clamp version of their locking pliers) and used this to clamp down the upper part of the end of the outer tie rod to the fitting on the wheel hub; this forced the upper portion of the threaded stud down into the hole (where the threaded part ends it then widens into a smooth circular section); this helped to effectively “lock” the threaded stud in place, so I could then tighten the locknut onto the stud and complete fastening the outer tie rod end onto the hole in the fitting on the wheel hub.

So, if any fellow Saab-o-philes experience this problem with the threaded stud moving when attempting to tighten the locknut, consider the Vice Grip locking C-clamp procedure as a solution to this installation issue.
