If your car is '96+, the high temp problem could be the temp sensor in the left-hand side of the head (driver's side, US-spec). It's a small sensor mounted just below the small elbow coolant hose. It has an electrical connector on top. Be sure to get the correct one as that sensor comes with or without a gasket and you have to use the one that is oem with your engine (approx. $25 from dealer). That sensor controls when to kick on/off the cooling fan, as well as feeds info to the ECU. IF your car is older, then the fan is controlled by a thermal switch mounted in the radiator, and that switch would need to be replaced.

As to the tranny flush, always use Dexron-III. Best way to perform this is to drain all fluid by removing filter, reinstall old filter, refill case with approx. 4.5 quarts atf, drive the car for 15 minutes, let cool, then repeat process 2 more times. On the last time, install the new filter and check the atf level the next day (topping off if needed). By doing it this way, you have effectively replaced all old fluid with new in the case as well as the torque converter. Use your choice of manufacturer for the atf (I think the manual says Dexron-II, but it's been replaced with III). Get all parts from a site sponsor (they sell tranny flush kits).
