My 94cs threw a rod last year. But I could not fault the 2.3L engine bottom end design, or top end for that matter. I replaced the engine soon after. It is inclusive what caused it. For all I know it may have been my own neglect.
Having an aging fleet of six cars in a five driver family and having to take care of them may have taken its toll. I usually do not pull the dip stick to check the engine oil level between 10,000 mile oil changes because none of my cars consume oil. The rod thrwoing incident on my wife's 94cs happened at the tail end of the oil change cycle. On top of that, it has a turbocharger which after the engine threw a rod I found to have exccessive longitudinal play and found to be a source of oil leak.
Problem is the oil leak doesn't show up in my driveway or on the garage floor. It is not severe enough to cause the exhaust to show visible smoke. It is very possible the incident was caused by low engine oil level because it is being consumed through the exhaust. The oil pump is working fine and is putting out sufficient pressure. But if there is no oil to pump so that does no good in the end. So the oil level sensor SAAB took out starting in MY 94 may not have been such a good idea after all although it is prone to leak.
But this is still my speculation.
