I assume you had the car towed to the shop because it stopped running. There is a bit of information missing here that is critical.

Before it stopped running, did the oil light come on? Did the engine make a lot of nasty noises then stop? The time between the oil light coming on and the engine stopping can be only a few seconds. I will assume so, because the shop wouldn't pulll the oil pan just for entertainment value.

This is important to know - why did the engine stop? If you are sure it was due to oil starvation, the engine is dead. If it was a simple DI cassette failure, that is easily fixable and the engine is fine.

If the oil light came on, then yes, the engine is likely shot. There is an issue with modern cars (not just Saabs) of oil sludging. The sludge blocks the oil pickup tube, and the loss of oil pressure destroys just about anything that rotates in very short order.

Sludge is caused primarily by long oil change intervals. Argue all you want about better oils, but extending oil change intevals out to 7500 or 10K is just plain bad. As to moisture, that does not cause sludge. When the engine is started and run, it bakes the water out of the oil. As long as the engine gets up to temperature for a while, the water bakes out. Yes, a lot of short (3-4 mile) trips won't do it. But long oil change intervals, missed oil changes, those cause sludge.

If the engine died due to oil starvation, there is no easy or cheap way to get it running. And any band-aid followed by selling it to some poor sucker is just plain bad and evil.

If the engine is dead, you are in a poor situation. The residual value of the car with a good engine is really only about $2-$5K at best. With no engine, drop $3K off that. Your best bet is to either find a used engine from a donor car and drop that in, or sell the car as-is. Either way, full disclosure is required.
