I spotted a new VDO boost gauge on fleabay which I snapped up because VDO seem to have discontinued this version, 150-035-001G, which reads vacuum as well as boost. Wanted to replace the slightly tacky gauge in the hole where my clock used to be. The VDO gauge is a lot deeper front-to-back, by the way, so extra surgery was required but the patient survived.
As well as desiring a more pukka gauge I was rather hoping that the 0.7 bar reading I was getting, rather than the 0.8 I theoretically deserve from my automatic ECU, was a gauge problem. However, the new VDO still showed 0.7 max boost most of the time.
I then treated myself yesterday to a tank of Shell V-power, which has become very expensive at £1.06 per litre. Well, I suppose I got three-quarters of a tank on top of some supermarket 98-octane (UK style).
Result - when hammering across the Mendips this morning I got the needle flicking up to 0.9 bar and settling at 0.8 most of the time, just by putting in better fuel.
I'll top up with V-power a few more times so I'm running pretty well 100% on the stuff. Past experience is that it improves mileage as well as performance so maybe I can swallow the extra cost.
However, two thoughts on this. One is that there's something wrong, maybe plugs, to check out because I ought to get the specified boost levels on normal Premium fuel. The other is, does anybody know - if I'd been driving a manual, would I still have got 0.7 bar or more like 0.9 bar, like a little lower than the full 1 bar?
