the easy way i found the rust on my rear shock tower was to jack up car and remove rear wheel.
i stuck my finger right through. undercoat and paint do not a stable suspension pickup point make.
then i pulled all the stuff out. changed speakers while i was at it.
there's some pictures in my gallery.
BTW, it was a hugely successful repair.
if it's clicking, it's probably the tower. fix it before it breaks loose and save yourself most of the hassle.
