I look at it this way. Unless it snows a lot where you are, you only *really* need the full traction snows give you during and for a day or two after a storm. Then the roads are pretty much clear and even good all-seasons are OK. So IMO, having the toothiest, grippiest snows is nice but not always essential. Running real snow tires, or something like the Nokian WR should be fine, but in a size that still gives you good dry road performance.

I've had some 205/60 x 15 Dunlop Graspics that were new tires on some dinged up Saab alloys that came with the car 4 years ago. Having driven them through a couple of blizzards on semi-plowed roads through mountains, I can say that size works just fine. I'll probably put the same size on in November unless the price difference is enough to persuade me to go to 195/65 x 15. Would there be a difference running a narrower tire, like a 185? Yeah, probably, but not enough for it to be worth compromising dry road performance from November to April. IMO, a 195 is a good compromise. FWIW, my daughter's 9K has 195/60 x 15 Nokian WRs on it and it seems to handle snow just fine.
