Do you mean the small shock absorber separated in 2 pieces? That's normal, because it really is made of 2 pieces and works like a piston in a tube. If it did separate, you lost the oil inside. Clean everything with brake cleaner and let dry.
Check to see if the half with the shaft has a small circlip at the end of the shaft. If it is missing, try to find it on the floor, it's very small or try to find a circlipe in hardware or machine shop that fit's.

Pull back the rubber sleeve and press the shaft into the tube, (you need strong hands to compress the stiff spring). I found a way to compress the shock and keep it short for installation by a stainless steel 6" pipe clamp. After assembling the two halfs, keep it upright and fill the bottom bigger half with brake or power steering fluid to 1/4" below the top. Pull down the rubber sleeve over the bigger tube and make sure it fits properly in the groove and makes a tight seal. Keep the tensioner compressed and install it in the car. Put the serpentine belt in properly and start loosening the screw on the clamp. If everything is ok, continue loosening until the clamp opens and just pull it out.
