Timing Chain/ Balance shaft

Before leaving on a 1600 km (1000 mile) round trip last weekend I changed the oil and serp belt on my '91 non turbo 9000. About 400 km into the trip I began hearing a bit of a clicking noise during idle. When I revved the engine above 200 rpm the noise went away. Throughout the trip the noise got progressively worse but I was able to make it home. By the time I reached home the clatter at idle was pretty awful (I think cutlery in the engine is a pretty fair description) I checked this site and hoped perhaps it might be a water pump bearing or the belt tensioner but when I removed the belt the clatter continued. I put the belt back on ran it a bit and then decided to check the flex plate on the transmission.
When I tried to restart it there was no firing so assumed the chain was broke and began taking the the head cover off. With the head cover off the chain looks OK so now I'm wondering if the problem could be something else. What about the crakshaft positioning sensor?
Should I continue to move the timing chain cover to inspect the balance shaft chain or are there some other tests I can do?
