It could also be your ignition switch is going bad. An easy test would be to rewire the small (solenoid) wire to a separate switch and see if the same problems occur. Yes, I think you can replace the starter solenoid, but hopefully the gear isn't chewed-up. Buy a good used one from a junk yard and keep the other for the starter motor. Check and clean all the electrical connection on battery and chassis. If the Bendix gear is pop-in on and off then its your solenoid. "CAUTION" soak the nuts on the starter, as the plastic/Bakelite tends to break when removing the old starters power cables. Who knows?, it could be just a bad terminal end on the wire going to the starter solenoid.
