I put a motor with 40K miles on it into my 134K miles Saab 9000 Aero. This could be a wonderful 'upgrade' to the lifespan of my saab.I didn't want to, though. It was a necessity since i'd let it run without addressing some maintenance items. My BPC is now considered a maintenace item, something tat for 250$ would have saved me a couple thousand. My BPC and sme new spark plugs are currently saving me 5-8MPG to boot.
I had the following symptoms: under heavy pedal i'd get boost spikes WAY BEYOND RED. Those are what blew the last engine, for sure. Dont push your luck by forcing it into the red to see if the problem persists. it very may well.
Under moderate pedal the car was stumbly and sluggish. Sometimes it would feel like the engine 'plateaued' and hesitated before moving on in the rpms...thats probably from bad air-fuel mix...a result of the computer not knowing the right ammount of air...in turna result of the bpc not holding the air pressure...a result of a bad bpc.
note: you CAN test it to see if it's your wastegate. plug the turbo hose into the wastegate to bypass APC. if it only reaches base boost you're wastegate is OK.
The BPC should be first on your list. It's a lofty $250 part but is 700$ less than a new computer.
I'm no mathematician, but...250 bucks is a lot less than 2000.
While you're changing it out you might as well change out your spark plugs and maybe air filter. they are 35$ together and add some assurance that you wont fry your DI Cassette or have clogged up airways.
right so...300$ to fix my overboosting... and do a quick refresh. The BPC was suspected but I was too poor to afford when i read the posts on this very BB...so i bought a used one...and six months later...an engine.
I've learned my lesson. this weekend the car is getting another set of shocks and some brake pads/rotors. I'll also be refreshing the fluids.
i'm young, but i'm growing to understand the importance of maintenance and how a little up front can make all of the difference.
