Brick....when you put the car into Drive finally after you are moving, does it go all the way to drive, or does it stop in 3rd gear, indicating that maybe your cable isn't adjusted correctly? One way to check it...on the backside of the transmission, pretty much right under the battery box / brake fluid reservoir area, you'll see the shifter cable attach to the tranny. It is held onto the actuator arm with a little clip. If you take off that clip, it releases the cable, and you can manually move the tranny through the gears. (have the e-brake on!!!). Try putting the car in park (lever moved all the way toward the drivers side fender) and have a buddy start the car. Depress the brake pedal, then rotate the lever all the way to the other side; that will be first gear. See if the car moves again. If not, then I'd say it might be time to look for another tranny. If it does move, I'd say look at your cable and see where the cable eyelet is when the car is in first gear, versus where the rod the cable attaches to is when the car is manually placed in first gear. I've never had one mis-adjusted, but you never know....its a quick, cheap sanity check before you go get another tranny.
