SaabBob,
I've always gone for the lower route on my pre 93 9000s and just did another one;my wife's 89.
There's no major difficulty as long as you get the front of the car high enough to move around below. On her auto trans, it's 2 bolts, push the vertical stay out of the way, withdraw the starter horizontally for a bit, and with a little help rotating the starter body it will pass through the obstacles.
Installing the new starter is the reverse and a little more awkward due to the weight of the starter. It's not easy to support and get the bolts started at the same time. All while lying on your back. That's when a friend comes in handy to hold the starter from above while you get the bolts aligned and started.
You can reattach the cables from below or get access to them from above by removing the big breather rubber hose between the turbo and the throttle body (again an 89) I haven't tried any of this stuff on the 98 CSE. It may be totally different.
