Failed Meyle wheel bearings

A few months ago my 1997 Aero rolled over 175k. Being a fastidious sort, I decided to change both front wheel bearings even though the original bearings seemed to be ok.

I ordered up a pair of Meyle bearings from a site sponsor. The new bearings were very carefully installed and torqued to 207 ft lbs with a new S&K torque wrench.

A few weeks ago the bearings began making noise. This has progressed to a very audible howl.

Disassembling both sided this weekend, I've found that the seals on both Meyle bearings are shot. One seal is black and the other is green. Grease is oozing from the green seal and the bearing with the black seal seems to have no grease at all left.

Comparing the Meyles to the stock Saab bearings is quite interesting. The stock Saab bearings have a metal dust seal over the rubber bearing seal.

The Meyles leave the seal exposed to the CV joint side of the bearing. Any grit, brake dust or road dirt has easy access to the seal from the CV joint side.

If I can find a digital camera I will take a pictures of the different bearings, but the problem is quite obvious. With no metal dust seal I really can't see how the Meyle bearings are going to ever survive.

Does anyone know if the Optima bearings have the metal dust seal like the stock Saab bearings?

Better still, where can I find the stock Saab bearings?
