well, before you bring it back, check the electrical plug atop the transmission; I'm pretty sure this leads to the tach (I have a '90, so the location may be different)
if this is fine, go back to the shop...they should warrant their service.
if it operates intermittently and only when the car is warm, I'd say something's loose. when the engine warms, the tranny heats up considerably and much of that could be transfered to some component, expanding it enough to make contact.
it's a stretch, though, so let the car idle to be sure it's heat related. don't drive it around becuase that needs to be your control.
the engine temperature may just be conincidental; perhaps once you've reached normal temp, you've gone over enough bumpy road to wiggle a connection. maybe not; we could be getting a physics lesson. who knows?
in any case, sounds like the transmission people missed something(assuming the work was just done). bring the car back and have them fix it.
