A knock sensor should be calibrated such that it can differentiate between valvetrain noise and real knock. Generally, you know you are knocking by a lack of power under full throttle; you lose power drastically as timing is retarded. If the system is working properly, you won't hear knock, as the sensor will cut timing at the first knock it senses; faster than it will take your ear to recognize it.
One way to indicate might be to look at your boost gauge. If you pound the throttle and your boost goes into the red, then backs off, it could be a sign that you have knock. It also could be a sign of a hundred other things, but its definitely something you'd see.
