Presuming you have skinny little arms like me, you CAN get to the alt. w/o removing the PS pump. Jack the car, take off the wheel and fender liner. Loosen the belt (don't forget the bolt holding the tensioner is reverse threaded) and remove the two bolts that hold the alt in place. Then curse and kick and swear until it comes out - its stuck in the bracket pretty darned well. Its a good bit of advice to remove only the VR first, as its only 2 screws - much easier than taking the entire alt out. The screws can be a bit tricky to remove, but unless you're 200% sure its the alt, check the VR. Also - don't forget to disconnect the neg battery lead. It can tickle a bit if you don't. Good luck. Getting it back in will take another amount of kicking and cursing - its a really tight fit. Hope this helps......
The PS pump, BTW, isn't hard to get out, just one more step that is unnecessary if you can manage to reach underneath it. Most of the work is done from the side if I remember right, by my 9kt is long since gone. I did this a few times about 2 years ago.......
