How long have you been running on dented pistons?
To me, the real concern with banged up pistons might be cracking that can develop. But how large a risk is that? Probably very small. After that, I suppose it's a matter of whether or not the dents in the pistons cause contact with the cylinder walls and resultant scoring. Again, low risk in my opinion. Thirdly, there's maybe a chance of hot spots and detonation from any areas of sharpish metal, or sharp corners, where the dents are. Still think a small risk.
So, that leaves just the head to worry about. As you say, heads are available and don't cost much. So I'd just go that route and see how it goes.
I don't think you'll find much to worry about. And for a few hundred bucks, you don't have to drive the car very far for it to pay off.
