Safe speed depends on so many factors. Divided highway with high barrier, no cars in sight, perfect weather, fenced from the side, no bushes for wildlife to hide in - speed limit 65. Divided highway with no barrier, bushes right up to the edge, not fenced, traffic all around - speed limit 65. Most of us would recognize that 65 is not equally safe in both scenarios. It may be that 85 in the first scenario is statistically less likely to lead to an accident than in the second scenario. Or even 100. And 100 for 10 seconds - is that somehow less safe than 80 for an hour? Or 7 in traffic for 4 hours? And if we're going to be rigidly judgemental, has anyone here who is sure that 100 even briefly is unsafe in any U.S. location happened to have driven 75 in traffic with the music playing? Or 75 talking on the cell phone? Or 75 at night? Or how about 65 at night? Is that automatically safe, just because it's the speed limit? Or how about 65 and making unsignalled lane changes? And on and on.... I'm making this point to say that we shouldn't be so judgemental, because there are numerous factors that contribute to safety or lack thereof.
