I have a 96 9000 CSE that idles at 1500-2000 rpm once the engine warms up. The system would rev the engine up every second at idle, abruptly cutting fuel supply, thereby shaking the whole body as the rpms go down, until the very next second. That's when idling. When driving, when I release the gas, rpms won't go below 1500 and the system would rev the engine up every maybe 6 to 10 seconds. In other words, the car would start accelerating, then decelarating, then accelerating again a few seconds later. If I happen to apply the brakes the moment it revs up, it feels like I have lost all breaking power.
I approached the problem as follows:
Checked the error code, turned out 3004, i.e. cylinder four misfire. DI cassette was a bit lose, tightened the bolts, code became 3000, random misfire.
Bought a used working DI cassette and replaced the old one, no change in behavior or error code.
Cleaned the AIC valve and checked for vacuum leaks, no change and no apparent leaks
Disconnected coolant temp sensor, idle was fine for a while even as the engine warmed up, then it went crazy. Upon start up, the engine would rev to 4500 rpm and won't go down until you tap the gas a little. I got two more error codes, idle sensor RPM high [or something along those lines] and coolant temop sensor voltage high.
Replaced the coolant temp sensor, no change.
Somewhere in between I tried disconnecting sensors. The one at the throttle brought the idle up even more. The ones at the injectors were looking suspicious, when I disconnected one, nothing changed, disconnected another one, the engine almost died.
By the way, the first time that happened my mechanic replaced the oxygen sensors. Then it happened again and he replaced the front one only, I think. That was good for 200 miles. Also, engine has overheated once and maybe something else went wrong then [bad water pump]. Performance remains unchanged, although there is much less turbo lag at the low rpms because of the intermittent fuel supply. Gas mileage is maybe the same, I don't know since I don't drive much.
Any ideas?
