accumulator pump running too much

I wanted to bring this problem to the top of the page and thank Ari and Dick T for the input. I re-performed the fast pump a number of times and the abs light is turning on at four to 12 pumps. The pump turns on after two to 4 pumps, runs 10 seconds or so then turns off. Also unless it is my imagination the pedal is feeling spongy. When I pump the pedal it does not rise in height. When I keep steady pressure on the pedal it does not sink toward the floor. Both of these behaviors I would expect with a bad master.
After a closer examination I found a trace of wetness on a rear caliper.And I mean just a trace. There has been no visible drop in the fluid. I have ordered a new caliper and hope to have it here before the weekend so I can install. New hoses also. So...after all this is it possible there could be air in the lines causing the pump to recycle and give a spongy feel in the pedal? The other possibilities are looking rather expensive and time consuming so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Bill
