We have 2 9Ks and an '03 9-5 SW and the 9-5 is definitely still a Saab. Some of the purists may not agree, but having had Saabs for 23 years I can say it is. Is it a C900? No. But I really don't want it to be. My '84 C900 was a great car--I had it for 20 years--but the more refined nature of the 9-5 is just fine. I still like my 9000 better in most ways, but they are both very much Saabs. The only place the 9K is less Saab-ish is that the key is in the wrong place.
People complaining about new cars not being the same as older ones is, IMHO ridiculous. Should all sports cars be like '53 MGs? Should Porsches all have air-cooled 4-cylinder engines? Should all Caddy's have tailfins? Should all cars have drum brakes, live axles and carburators? And not have seat belts?
