I'm seeing similar behavior on my 96 aero and have wondered the same thing. However sometimes I see the gauge reading 50% and sometimes it stays really low. If your termostat is stuck open, then you could start the engine and the upper radiator hose should be hot very quickly? However, if the TS was open, I would think the gauge would still swing over a greater range depending if you were idling or moving on the freeway.
I've never replace the TS or all my hoses so I plan on doing some preventive maint. Is it hard to replace all the heater hoses?
