To follow up on Jeff's remark, I'd narrow it down to ignition switch, starter solenoid, or starter.
You said the lights came on fine. I'm going to assume that when you turn the key to START, the lights not only stay on, they don't dim.
The wiring is basically battery to ignition switch to starter solenoid to starter.
If the lights dimmed, it would imply the starter got current, but just didn't turn. Starters pull lots of power. So no dim, not the starter.
If the ignition switch is working, it sends power to the starter solenoid, which switches the power to the starter. If the switch is working but the solenoid contacts are dirty, you'll hear a 'click' from the area of the starter. The starter is on the backside of the engine, under the intake manifold, between the engine and the firewall, right above the gas pedal. Do you hear a click from there when you turn the key but the engine doesn't turn?
If you hear a click but get no starter, it's probably the solenoid. If you don't get a click, I'd suspect the ignition switch.
I can also be the wiring directly to the starter (big red wire), but even then, you should get some dimming.
So -
Lights dim?
Hear a click?
