That sort of strange shifting can be due to low fluid, but I'd also suspect either a broken valve body spring, or a really badly blown govenor seal. The really good news is that valve body springs or govenor seals can be replaced with the tranny in car, which is a much cheaper solution. Your problems don't sound like clutch/gear failures, which are the really expensive problems.
