DI....DI.....DI.....decision and solution ! Posted by vtsnaab [Email] (#26) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vtsnaab) on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 23:19:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I know - goofy title - but if you're reading this it served just fine !
My mechanic has a sort of mantra which he tells folks with DI equipped
cars, and it's: ALWAYS carry a spare !!!
So I got a good used one and have done so - but it has always troubled
me to not have a decent way to keep it with me, but out of harm's way.
I thought it'd be a great rainy day project to make a sort of rack to
go behind the back seat, but I didn't get a round tuit yet....and the
solution came to me instead in the meantime.
Since I don't drive a new car under warrantee coverage I always carry
some tools, and in recent years that has become an older top-type box
with 3 drawers and an assortment of useful tools for roadside fixes.
It is a nice old Craftsman metal box which survived the moose accident
with only minimal hammering out. But it is too small to have a DI unit
inside it safe and sound.
Recently Sears had a similar box in their flyer, only made of plastic,
regular price $45, on sale for almost 1/2 price so I went and looked.
It's bigger on the outside, and I thought just because it's made of
that blow molded plastic - but the price was right, so thinking it'd
get returned, I got one. Wow. Same essential box, exactly the same 3
drawers - but the top tray, well - it's different, and bigger too.
Guess what ? It easily fits my spare DI unit with space for a few
small things, and the box fit right into the same space I've always
used for my metal toolbox too.
So - if you want to carry one but not in the bulky shipping box, this
is a great way to do it which obviously I recommend because I'm doing
it myself !
Best Wishes,
mark
