and is always a letter - for instance, V=1997, S=1994 - so if you have a number here, maybe the seller gave you the wrong information?
If you Google "Saab VIN decoder" you'll find your way to various options.
However, here for the record is what the handbook of my 1997 Anniversary fpt says:
1/Geographical area: Y = Sweden
2/Country: S = Sweden
3/Motor Manufacturer: 3 = Saab Automobile AB
4/Product Line: C = 9000
5/Model Series:
C = CD/CS with driver's airbag
D = CD/CS with driver's and passenger's airbag
E = CDE/CSE with driver's airbag
F = CDE/CSE with driver's and passenger's airbag
G = Aero with driver's airbag
H = Aero with driver's and passenger's airbag
K = Griffin with driver's airbag
M = Griffin with driver's and passenger's airbag
6/Body Style:
4 = 4-door (CD)
5 = 5-door (CS)
7/Gearbox:
5 = Manual 5-speed gearbox
8 = four-speed automatic transmission
8/Engine Variant:
J = 2.0i
T = 2.0t (150hp) (ECO)
U = 2.3t (170hp) (ECO)
M = 2.3 Turbo (200hp)
R = 2.3 Turbo (225hp)
9/Check Digit: 0-9/X
10/Model Year: V=1997
11/Production locality: 1 = Trollhattan
12/Serial number: six numerical digits
