thanks ari,
i did check the water at some point and it was ok, it was awhile ago.
i've always thought that one of the caps didn't seat down low enough, just from looking at it, but i pushed on it and it seemed tight...
edu was fairly accurate when i could see it compared with voltmeter (tested last summer). i saw it the other day in the sunlight and i think it was in the high 12s, or maybe 13, i remember thinking it was a bit low, but not really low.
i never saw the edu go over 13.9 volts to my recollection cold, maybe it hit 14.0 once, but it was typically 13.7 or 13.8, occasionally 13.9.
i put this voltage regulator in a couple years ago, maybe 20K miles ago...
battery seems to be performing great now after having run the car for 45 minutes this afternoon, i'm hoping that doesn't cause Pep Boys to give me a hard time about replacing it. the last time i had a bad battery they tested it and said it was OK and i came back twice over the course of a year because it wouldn't hold a charge for a long time if i wasn't using the car, eventually it wouldn't hold a charge at all, and tested BAD and then they replaced it. if it tests OK now, which wouldn't surprise me, it's gonna be a fight I think to get it replaced.
