Hiya, I'm looking for some insight here. I've got a 1996 Saab 9000 CSE Turbo (automatic) with around ~118k miles on it. A few months ago I took it in to get the brakes done and found out due to my neglect (lack of understanding + first car = let things slide until they're broke) I'd have to have 1 caliper, all four rotors, all four brake pads replaced. AND both of my half-shafts were cracked, near broken, and needed replacing ASAP. So I had all the work done and all was fine and dandy up until the beginning of this week.
On Tuesday I noticed a noise coming from somewhere near me (could be tires, could be in engine bay, could be right below me) as I was backing out of my parking spot and had my steering wheel all the way to the left. It sounded like a balloon squeaking but harder, if that makes any sense. Very rubbery/plasticy sound. I know that it makes it when I have my steering wheel turned left. I think that I've heard it in reverse with the wheel to the right, and I know that I haven't heard it going forward. In fact, I can go in reverse and hear it, go foward and it's gone, then go in reverse and hear it again.
Today my dad was visiting me at work and I had him take a listen and look from outside the car. He heard a noise too and checked the wheel wells, but didn't see the tire rubbing on anything. Here's the kicker though, his noise was completely different than my noise: I had him get in the car and he was really surprised, it sounded completely different. With a front door open, you can still hear the noise. It's not as loud, nor as rubbery. Rather it's a lot more groany, a smidgen clicky (but it doesn't sound like metal wearing on metal).
My dad suggested that I try lubricating the chassis if I could. He said it might be a CV joint, but he wasn't sure. I only understand at a basic level what the CV joint and Half-shafts are, but I though that when I had my entire halfshafts replaced that it included the CV joint? Or is it that the CV joint is connected to the halfshafts, but a different thing altogether? In any event, why would it be making the sound in reverse and not foward? He said that it didn't sound like any transmission sound he's ever heard, so he's very doubtful it's the transmission. My dad also said that he thought he heard it in forward, but wasn't sure. In the car, however, there's no noise going forward. It sounds to me like something's so close to the cabin that it's transfering the sound into the cabin, which is what I'm hearing as the rubbery sound.
I figured I'd look into the lubrication thing and if that didn't solve it I'd take it up to the place where I had my halfshafts done, as they're still under warrenty. Still, I'd like to have some idea about what may be going on before I take it in, any suggestions?
