I am assuming that the UK-market radios are the same as the Clarion/SAAB units we got in the US. Cars from 1995 - 1998 have the unit with the removable faceplate; have you tried removing/cleaning the contacts for the faceplate? Did you try spraying contact cleaner into the volume control? These can get gummed up and cause similar symptoms.
At some point, it is more expedient to pick up a used unit from a "breaker" or eBay - the radios are quite cheap in the US. And yes, although I am in the electronics business, my time is worth something.
