...as I understand it K&N (and similar) filters were first developed in racing applications, presumably on paved racing circuits, which one would have to argue would be a cleaner environment than a normal public road. Less dust, less debris, I would think.
I know that a tuned engine has a greater need for intake air, thus the recommendation for an open air intake which eliminates the more restrictive intake tubing. Perhaps a paper filter is available for that application, or could be fashioned. Heck, might be a business venture for one of us!
On the other hand, if your paper filter in the stock setup was excessively clogged, maybe simply replacing it with a new one would have given you similar seat-of-the-pants improvement. Do you know if your old filter was very old?
Also, know that the fender well location is not that much better for fine grit, which is what the K&N doesn't filter so well. It's better than the engine compartment, but not by leaps and bounds.
